Every design has had three font choices for a long time: headings, subheadings and body text. Those cover almost everything on a page. They did not cover the one piece of type some designs are built around, which is usually your name, set huge across the front page.
On those designs, the typeface for that name was fixed. You could change every other word on the site and not that one.
A fourth slot
Designs that have such an element now show a fourth choice on the Fonts page, called Display Font. It is live on 16 designs so far. If your design does not have a big headline element, the slot simply does not appear, because there would be nothing for it to change.
Nothing changes until you pick one. If you leave it empty, your design keeps exactly the face it has today.
Why it is a different list
A body font has to be readable at 16 pixels for three paragraphs. A display font has to look good at 120 pixels for two words. Those are different jobs, and the fonts that do one well usually do the other badly. So the display list is its own hand-picked set: condensed faces like Bebas Neue and Teko, classic serifs like Cinzel and Abril Fatface, script faces like Kaushan Script, and a few with real character like Monoton and Special Elite. Several are served from our own servers, so they load as fast as the rest of your page.
The Fonts page saves as you pick
The Fonts page used to be the one screen under Website with a Save button at the bottom. It now saves the moment you choose a font, the same way the Colors page does. Pick, look at your site, pick again. The preview panel is also wide enough to show a real line of text rather than one letter per row.
How to choose
Say your name out loud and think about the work you want. A condensed sans reads as current and commercial. A serif reads as theater and period drama. A script reads as personal, and gets hard to read fast, so keep it for short names. If your name is long, avoid the widest faces; they will shrink to fit and lose their point.
For the other three slots, font choices for actor websites covers the basics, and how font loading keeps your layout still explains why a new font does not make your page jump. If you pick a face with a lot of personality, keep your colors calm around it. And if you are here before you have a site at all, start one free.
